My name is Samson Komati
Yuimb, 31, and a native of the Kentiga Tribe in Western
Highlands Province, Papua New Guinea. I was born and raised in Kokop
Village - a remote rural village located 45 minutes drive west of
Mt. Hagen City (the provincial capital). I am married to Christine,
a cardiac specialist (perfusion) from California, U.S.A., and we
have no children. My wife lives in Thousand Oaks City in California
while I am based out of Port Moresby, Papua New
Guinea.
Upon completion of primary
education at Kindeng Primary School in 1986, I was offered a place
to continue my studies at Mt. Hagen High School, Western Highlands
Province. I graduated in 1990 and was offered a scholarship to train
as a primary school teacher at Balob Teachers' College in Lae,
Morobe Province. In 1993, I graduated with a Diploma in Education
(Primary Teaching) and taught at two separate primary schools in
the Western Highlands Province.
In the summer of 1995, my
application for further studies was considered. I enrolled at Waldorf College in Forest
City, Iowa, United States of America. In April of 1997, I graduated
with an Associate of Arts Degree in Business Administration.
I transfered to California
Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks City, California in the
fall of 1997. In 2000, I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in
Political Science and was employed by corporate America. After a
year of employment, I won a scholarship to continue graduate studies
at California State University at
Northridge. In May of 2000, I successfully completed my
required course work and thesis project, and graduated with a
Master of Public Administration.
After spending seven and half
years in America, I decided to return home in May 2002. Upon arrival
in Mt. Hagen, I was asked by former Prime Minister, Paias Wingti
(current Governor of Western Highlands Province) to help run his
July 2002 election campaigns. Upon his successful bid, he appointed
me as "Provincial Foreign Aid Coordinator" and on occassions served
as his political aide. I also served as Member of the Mt. Hagen
Culture Show Committee, and Member of Western Highlands Provincial
Tourism Bureau. In August of 2003, I voluntarily ceased my
employment with the Office of the Governor of Western Highlands
Province.
Currently, I am based in Port
Moresby and actively engaged in my start-up business venture while
running my eco-lodge in Mt. Hagen. Apart from professional work, I
give my free times towards volunteer
community development initiatives. In November 2003, I
registered Kokop
Village Eco-Forestry Development Organization (KVEDO),
Incorporated- a rural village-based, non-profit, and
sustainable environmental development advocacy organization. I
founded KVEDO, Inc. in August of 2000 to practically promote,
encourage, and advocate eco-forestry, eco-tourism, and nature
conservation development in Western Highlands
Province.
In January 2004, I founded the
Western
Highlands Leadership Development Forum - a pioneer
initiative which aims at bringing all the Western Highlands business
men and women, professionals in both government and private sectors,
and leaders in churches, communities, and non-government
organizations, to come together for a one-day forum with the aim of
letting go our differences and to celebrate our
achievements.
Personally, I enjoy the company
of friends. I like reading materials related to economics, politics,
and business. I enjoy watching action and suspense-thrillers, and
aim at keeping myself physically fit. I have a strong passion for
natural environment and cultural issues. I strive to create ideas,
innovate change, and initiate activities all aimed at making a
positive difference in my local community, tribe, province, and
country. I regard myself as a leader of my country, and as such, am
passionate about making a positive difference in my profession and
civic roles, and in doing so, I hope to leave a lasting legacy for
future generations: this is the mission of my life.
